Learning outcomes #5 and 6 require students to document their work by using appropriate conventions (MLA) and control sentence-level errors (grammar, punctuation, spelling). My Chosen Work Sample shows my ability to cite sources using MLA guidelines because I make sure all of the punctuations in a quote are correct and that my Works Cited page is complete the right way before submitting my work. If I see that any typical errors arise, I make the necessary local revisions to fix them. For example, if something is spelled incorrectly, there should be a stronger word in place, or if the punctuation should be different to convey my point, I fix it to the right thing. In the early drafts of my CWS, there was a lot that I needed to change to get it ready for submission. Once I am done with writing all parts of my essay, I go through and make sure all of my punctuation is correct, that all of the quotes are cited properly with the quotations surrounding and a comma inside and parentheses outside of the quotations that contain the last name of the source used and page number that the quote was from. Sometimes, the quote could be from two pages. After that, the period ends the sentence. I use Grammarly to help me with spelling and punctuation, but when it starts to try to suggest changing my sentence or adding something as if it knows what I’m trying to get across, I ignore it and continue with my writing because it doesn’t know, and that would be cheating. So I like it for my actual grammar usage only and nothing more because I find it helpful.
